Embarking on Internship is a milestone for any student, and for me, it was no different. On June 4th, 2024, I began my internship in the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) department at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI). This experience turned out to be a bridge between theory and practice, immersing me in real-world public health efforts. Working at UVRI, a leading institution in Uganda\u2019s fight against infectious diseases, couldn\u2019t have been a more perfect place for this leap.<\/p>\n

In the M&E department, I quickly realized how essential it is for ensuring the success of health programs. Our team was responsible for designing frameworks, tracking key performance indicators, and analyzing data to inform public health policies.<\/p>\n

One standout project was developing an M&E framework for a new vaccine trial. I worked closely with experienced officers, translating complex goals into measurable outcomes\u2014an invaluable learning process.
\nField visits were equally eye-opening, presenting challenges like data inconsistencies and logistical hurdles. I helped implement mobile data collection tools like REDcap, improving both the accuracy of our data and the efficiency of future operations.<\/p>\n

Though the internship came with its share of obstacles\u2014tight deadlines, fieldwork challenges\u2014I embraced each one as a chance to grow. The experience honed my technical skills in data analysis (using Excel and SPSS) and strengthened my problem-solving abilities. More importantly, it solidified my passion for public health, especially in Monitoring and Evaluation.<\/p>\n

For anyone considering an M&E internship, my advice is to dive in fully. Embrace challenges as learning opportunities, ask questions, and push beyond your comfort zone. This internship taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of M&E in shaping effective health systems.<\/p>\n

I am more committed than ever to pursuing a career in public health, especially in Monitoring and Evaluation and I can\u2019t wait to use everything I have learnt to contribute to stronger and more effective health systems in the future.<\/p>\n
